Meta’s decision to open new avenues for content creators in Nigeria and Ghana to monetize their work on platforms like Instagram and Facebook marks a significant departure from previous policies. This development, effective this year, follows a commitment by Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, announced in March 2024, with plans for the feature’s launch in June. Clegg underscored that the monetization scope would extend beyond Instagram, enabling eligible Nigerian creators to earn revenue on Facebook as well.

By May 2024, Facebook had amassed over 50 million users in Nigeria and more than 10 million in Ghana, as reported by NapoleonCat. This expansive user base presents substantial opportunities for content creators in these countries to explore new revenue streams.

Beyond in-stream and live ads, creators can diversify income sources through ads on reels, bonuses, and subscriptions, expanding their earning potential on Meta platforms.

Recent tax changes in Ghana’s digital landscape, effective April 2024, require Ghanaian-based content creators and influencers earning from platforms like YouTube, X, TikTok, as well as remote workers using platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork, to pay taxes on their earnings. With Meta’s monetization introduction, earnings from Facebook and Instagram may similarly become taxable for creators in Ghana and potentially Nigeria.

Monetization opportunities aren’t confined to Nigeria and Ghana. Clegg announced in March that Kenyan content creators would also gain monetization access on Facebook and Instagram from June 2024, contingent on meeting eligibility criteria.

This follows a December 2023 report indicating negotiations with the Kenyan government, paving the way for local creators to monetize content on Meta platforms. Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted a trial program involving qualified national creators before broader monetization options.
