Google has officially confirmed the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold smartphones ahead of its August Made By Google livestream event, following a wave of leaks earlier this week. The tech giant made the announcement via a video that, while sparse on details, confirms one significant aspect of the new devices: enormous camera bumps that are impossible to miss.
The video, presumably intended for an August 13 release, shows the Pixel 9 Pro in action, highlighting the substantial camera bump that has been the subject of much speculation. This bump, which resembles a 3D version of Bender’s head from Futurama, is sure to make a noticeable impression in pockets everywhere. Given its size, those planning to purchase the Pixel 9 Pro will likely need a specially designed case, as older cases won’t accommodate the new design.
Google’s teaser video also hints at extensive integration with the company’s Gemini AI models. The marketing copy accompanying the video simply states “oh hi, AI,” and showcases a chatbot responding to queries. This emphasis on AI features is expected in 2024 and aligns with Google’s broader strategic focus.
Alongside the Pixel 9 Pro, other leaks suggest that Google will unveil several other devices at next month’s event, including the standard Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Although these additional models have yet to be confirmed officially, the leaks point to a diverse lineup aimed at various market segments.
In another teaser video, Google introduces both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, offering a glimpse of the upcoming phones. The videos, primarily focused on Google’s AI assistant Gemini, are clearly labeled “Introducing the Google Pixel 9 Pro” and “Introducing the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.” The Pixel 9 Pro’s video reveals its significant, oval-shaped camera island with three lenses, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold showcases a double-stacked camera bump.
Google also updated its store with a new landing page featuring images of the two phones, revealing additional details. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, in particular, displays a redesigned hinge, flatter edges, and narrower bezels, indicating significant improvements over the previous Pixel Fold, which was criticized for its bulky bezels.
While we await detailed specifications, it’s evident that the substantial camera bumps on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold serve a purpose, likely housing advanced camera systems. Google’s early reveal strategy is consistent with its response to past leaks, opting to unveil key details ahead of the official launch to manage the narrative.
As always, we will be covering the August 13 event to bring you the latest updates on Google’s announcements.
