Ghana’s Internet Data Pricing: NCA Defends Amidst Public Outcry

The NCA defends Ghana's internet data pricing amidst public concerns, emphasizing affordability and fair competition measures.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has responded to the recent uproar over high internet data costs, affirming that Ghana offers some of the most affordable data in Africa. According to a report by cable.co.uk, reviewed by the NCA, Ghana ranks as the second most cost-effective country for data in West Africa and the third in Africa.

This defense comes in the wake of widespread dissatisfaction, particularly after MTN was declared a Significant Market Power (SMP). Many Ghanaians worry that this classification could worsen the already contentious data pricing issues.

Public Discontent and Social Media Backlash

The debate over data costs flared up on social media, with users criticizing the NCA and MTN for high prices. A viral post about MTN’s SMP status sparked numerous complaints, prompting the NCA to clarify its stance.

In a statement released on July 21, the NCA emphasized that the SMP classification aims to ensure fair competition within the telecommunications sector. The classification is not intended to punish or restrict MTN but to promote a balanced market that protects consumer interests.

Ensuring Fair Competition

The NCA’s statement highlighted that measures such as asymmetric interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality are designed to foster competition, encourage innovation, and protect consumers. These measures are expected to allow other operators to compete effectively, offer sustainable pricing, and invest in improving service quality.

Data Affordability Rankings

The NCA cited a cable.co.uk report indicating that Ghana is highly competitive in terms of mobile internet data pricing. The report ranked Ghana third in Africa and second in West Africa for affordable data, reaffirming the NCA’s stance on the relative affordability of data in the country.

Moving Forward

Despite public concerns, the NCA reassured consumers of its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure reliable and affordable internet access. By fostering a competitive environment and implementing strategic measures, the NCA aims to address pricing concerns and improve the overall quality of telecommunications services in Ghana.

Ironically

In response to mounting criticisms and social media outrage, the NCA has stood firm in its assertion that data costs in Ghana are among the lowest in Africa. By promoting fair competition and safeguarding consumer interests, the NCA aims to balance the market dynamics, ensuring that Ghanaians have access to affordable and reliable internet services.
