MTN has shut down all its offices and service centers across Nigeria for 24 hours, effective from July 30, 2024. This drastic move comes as a response to recent incidents of vandalism sparked by the company’s enforcement of the NIN-SIM linkage policy.
In a dramatic turn of events, a viral video on social media shows a mob violently attacking an MTN office in Lagos State’s FESTAC Town area. The footage depicts angry subscribers demolishing barriers and expressing their frustration over the disconnection of their lines due to discrepancies between their National Identification Numbers and SIM registrations.
The outrage erupted after MTN barred several customers’ lines on Sunday, leading to widespread public discontent. In response, a group of enraged subscribers destroyed the fence of an MTN office in Lagos, demanding immediate rectification.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, addressed the situation on X.com. He confirmed that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had successfully intervened, restoring peace and order at the scene.
As a precautionary measure, MTN has urged its affected customers to seek support through its digital channels during the office closure. The company has also issued a step-by-step guide to assist subscribers in unblocking their SIMs online.
MTN has assured its customers that normal operations will resume after the 24-hour closure period. The company’s statement on X highlighted its commitment to resolving the issues and maintaining customer service continuity.
