Google has officially launched the Pixel 9, marking a significant advancement in its smartphone lineup. Priced at $799, this new flagship model boasts cutting-edge features designed to enhance user experience and leverage Google’s advancements in artificial intelligence.
At the heart of the Pixel 9 is the Tensor G4 chip, complemented by 12GB of RAM, ensuring robust performance. The device’s 6.3-inch Actua Display, an OLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2424, is safeguarded by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, providing durability and clarity.
The revamped camera system is a highlight of the Pixel 9. The new camera island, a departure from the classic Pixel visor design, houses a 50 MP primary camera with 8x optical zoom and a 48 MP ultra-wide lens, which includes an enhanced macro mode. These upgrades aim to elevate photography to new heights.
Battery performance has also seen improvements. The Pixel 9 features a slightly larger 4,700 mAh battery wired 27W fast-charging capabilities. Google claims the battery can charge to 55% in just 30 minutes, although it does not support Qi2 magnets for MagSafe. Still, it does offer fast wireless charging.
Software-wise, the Pixel 9 introduces several new features. The Night Sight function continues from previous models, and a new “Add Me” feature allows AI-assisted merging of separate photos. Additionally, the Pixel 9 incorporates Satellite SOS, a feature that connects to a satellite network to ensure connectivity even in areas without coverage. This feature will be free for the first two years in the US.
Despite these advancements, the Pixel 9 will launch with Android 14, not the anticipated Android 15. However, it will receive several years of software and security updates, ensuring longevity and support.
Available in four colors—Obsidian, Porcelain, Wintergreen, and Peony—the Pixel 9 can be pre-ordered now and will ship starting August 22. As part of the launch, Best Buy offers a notable promotion: with a qualifying trade-in, customers can secure a Pixel 9 for as low as $0, along with a $200 Best Buy Gift Card.
